I have been in rooms where everybody loved ethics until ethics had a name.
Ethics in theory is easy. Ethics as a person with a badge, a file, a subpoena, a deadline, and a question about your former client is where the room gets cold.
On Day 1, Trump rescinded Biden's ethics executive order. Weeks later, he fired 17 inspectors general. Around the same time, he removed the head of the Office of Government Ethics. Then ProPublica published a database of more than 1,600 Trump appointees and their financial disclosures.

The Machine
The public is trained to wait for the cartoon version of corruption. A bag of cash. A secret meeting. A villain saying the quiet part into a microphone.
Modern corruption does not always need a bag. It needs a waiver, a disclosure range, an ethics agreement nobody reads, a former client, an agency portfolio, a spouse's holding, a crypto wallet, a recusal memo, a watchdog vacancy, and a public exhausted enough to call it process. That is why the 122,000 assets matter.

Remove the pledge. Remove the inspectors. Remove the ethics chief. Flood the government with people whose public disclosures require scrutiny. Then act offended when the public asks who is watching the watchers.
